Fabulous Feature :

Trio

Good things come in threes, right?  Well in the case of Deb her favorite item in her studio is actually THREE favorite items.  Sometimes it’s hard to narrow it down to just one.

vintage printers drawers

“A few of my favourite studio items are my vintage printers drawer where I have filled each and every little cubby with stamps and treasures like my Grandmother’s thimble, Grandfather’s hand carved wooden box, and childhood keepsakes including a small, favourite barrette.”

memory chandelier

“A repurposed plastic clothes dryer is now a memory chandelier. I created little paper rosettes and wrapped the entire dryer in ribbon & tulle. Hanging from thin silk ribbon are favourite photos, wire bird nest, prisms, a key from my teenage diary & inspirational sayings.”

vintage suitcase

“My vintage suitcase.  The perfect spot to hold my wool & knitting needles and store projects I am working on.”

Postal Sorter

Storage can be a huge issue in many studios and workspaces.  It is often difficult to find places for all of our tools, supplies, and items that we love.  Deborah has a wonderful solution to storage and organization in her studio.  I can see why this postal sorter is one of her favorite items in her workspace.

“I love this postal sorter. I use it to store my small stashes. When I am starting a project I stand in front of it for inspiration. Of course, I end up with several projects and lots of fond memories of collecting all these things. When I moved into my new studio (look how neat!) I detached the civvies and hung them on the wall. The table is now on wheels so I can pull it out to work. It is my main workspace.”

Is your favorite studio item a treasured item passed down through the generations?  Maybe it is a furry friend that you just can’t get enough of?  In the case of Trish…she couldn’t choose just one.  And who can blame her when you look at her grandmother’s painting and cute kitten.

Storage Cabinet

Where did you get the favorite item in your studio?  Was it gifted to you; maybe you found it at your favorite store; or maybe someone made it for you with love and care.  Michelle’s storage cabinet was created just for her and she made it her own.

“I’ve tried to fill my crafty nook ONLY with the things I love.  One special piece was added last year when my dear friend (and fellow crafter) from Alaska visited our family in Kansas.  This favorite item makes it possible for me to sit back and enjoy all of the others.

After dropping off my daughter (Shannon’s god-daughter) to freshman orientation at K-State, we drove on to nearby Abilene with the hope of discovering treasures in local antique stores.

Before leaving one of my favorite businesses, I went downstairs to their basement on a whim, turned a corner, and found a chair, a meant-to-be chair.  It was love at first sight, and Shannon insisted on contributing to its purchase as part of my birthday present.

I brought it home and set it in front of the window, never guessing that nine months later, I’d spot a familiar green while wandering through a local antique mall.

Meant-to-be.

That’s right: I now have two beautiful chairs in my crafty nook, though it was the discovery and adoption of the first that created the perfect spot to read, drink coffee, crochet, blog, and reflect.”

“This credenza was given to us from my husband’s parents.  It had sentimental value but needed a little updating and brightening up for a creative space.  I painted over the old dark stain with a couple of coats of fresh white paint.  To give it a more modern look, I added silver and black accent paint.  I also changed out the drawer pulls.  The cabinet doors slide open for tons of storage with an extra shelf.  The left side has two pull out trays for more storage and the two top drawers hold more of my small craft supplies.  Not only does the cabinet itself provide tons of storage but I also make use of the credenza top for holding a storage hutch, paper bin and containers with drawers.”

“This is my favorite item in my studio.  It had once belonged to my great grandparents.  My great grandma had bought it at an auction in order to add something more modern to her home.  I also love going to auctions… but instead I love to buy older items to add to my home! When it was given to me, by my mom about 10 months ago, the wood wasn’t in good shape.  I decided to paint it my  favorite color, sand it, then I added some glaze and new knobs.  It is a perfect place to hold my vintage alphabet stamp collection, my cutting systems and now my printer.”

Fabulous Feature: Millinery Hat Blocks

I was so excited to see this week’s Fabulous Feature submission from Jenny.  Custom hats has become a recent obsession in our household and we are all completely fascinated by this art.  Hand-making hats is becoming a craft that is not well recognized anymore.  But, if you see a well fitted, handmade hat, you will understand why it’s a true art form.  Jenny is sharing a few of her millinery hat blocks and supplies with us today.  I hope you are equally as fascinated and will do some research on this truly FABULOUS feature.

I hope this has inspired YOU to try on a hat!”
