Fabulous Friday :

Jewelry Case

Do you ever repurpose items for your studio, home, or workspace?  Maybe you’ve turned an old shelf into fantastic fabric storage, or maybe old trunks and suitcases now serve as décor and places to keep you prized treasures.  In this case, Beate she was able to turn an old distressed table into a perfect place to showcase jewelry.

“I started out with a much loved antique little shabby chic distressed table  I had had in our showroom for a while.

I’ve been having trouble finding a jewelry case that would fit the style of  my showroom and that would look special enough to house my friend’s amazing  jewelry, so I built a case for the top of the table/case that I refinished to  match (I am also a picture framer by trade). I then built two frames out of a  French style moulding that I hinged to the top of that frame. I lined the case  with some fabric, and ‘Voila!’, I ‘found’ what what I had been looking for:) It  has been getting a great response, especially from my friend who makes the  jewelry (KiraKira).”

Fabulous Friday :

Chandelier

Sometimes your favorite thing sparks your creative light from within.  In the case of Sandi’s chandelier, it ignites her creative light on the inside and outside.

“Thank you for letting me share one of my favorite items in my studio!  I have many favorite things, but my recent estate sale find for $20 is my newest favorite.  This beautiful old chandelier hasn’t been wired in yet, but just having it in my French inspired studio makes the space feel finished, in a grown up way.  I have surrounded myself with favorite creations, new pieces I love and blended them with old treasures from my Mom.  Now as a person who loves to decorate I know a space is never really ‘finished’ since I love to change things often, but it is almost like the room was just waiting for this old chandy!  I love it!”

I posted about my find on my blog…    http://www.acottagemuse.blogspot.com/2013/01/hello-2013.html“

Fabulous Feature: French Desk

This week’s Fabulous Feature has me salivating just a little.  The colors, the beauty, the lighting, and just everything seemed to scream to me.  If a picture is worth a thousand words I think this picture is worth 10 times that.  I can only imagine how gorgeous this French desk is in real life.  It makes complete sense why Angelina loves how it is displayed in her sewing room.  It’s breathtaking.

Fabulous Friday :

Fabulous Friday with Webster’s Pages …

Webster’s Pages is more than a company…it’s a family. Literally. Co-owned by brother and sister Tim Myers & Brandin O’Neill, the company grew out of a desire to get more involved in design and also in the relationships a scrapbooking business brings. As the owners of an art publishing company, Tim and Brandin were itching for something new…and they dove into the scrapbooking world, they never looked back.

And it’s a good thing, otherwise I wouldn’t have a job. And you wouldn’t have the option of incorporating our gorgeous, elegant designs into your artwork! Webster’s Pages is known for our vintage style and also our commitment to high quality products that will help you in your creative memory keeping. We also seem to have a knack for dressing up cards, mixed media artwork and virtually every kind of papercraft you can imagine.

But we’re a little biased, so why don’t we let you see for yourself?

Here we are on a scrapbook layout by Larissa Albernaz…

On a card by Stacey Michaud…

And this gorgeous door hanger by Ivana Camdzic:

We’ve got a little something for everyone, it seems. Personally, I’ve found I have a love affair with a whole assortment of our products. Here are some of my favorites:

And of course, there are all kinds of incredible papers. Our newest lines show off what we’re all about: timeless memory keeping.

The Botanical Christmas & All About Me Collections:

The Winter Fairy Tales & Western Romance  Collections:

We aim for elegance.

Because we want your scrapbooks to withstand the test of time. Creating a visual record of your life…it’s therapeutic. And important. Scrapbooking gets in your blood. Once you start journaling your stories, you don’t want to stop. And if you’re going to do it, you might as well make it beautiful, right?

It all boils down to this…at Webster’s Pages, we’re passionate about what we do. About art. About scrapbooking. About preserving our memories. And especially about helping you preserve yours. We don’t do this because it’s our job…we do it because it’s our passion.

Webster’s Pages is committed to making life beautiful.

Today, we’re excited to offer you the chance to join in the Webster’s Pages love. We’re giving away a collection kit of your choice. Just tell us which line is your favorite and why! We can’t wait to hear what you love!

Don’t forget to stop over at the Webster’s Pages blog for all kinds of inspiration every single day. And swing by the Webster’s Pages website to get your own stash today!

We’d love for you to say hi!

Thank you so much Courtney … So nice to “Meet” you!

We love Webster’s pages!

If you enjoy scrapbooking or any kind of paper crafting, you’ve got to visit them.

I’m using their holiday paper for a paper mache snowman and I can’t wait to show you when I’m done!

Now that you’ve met the team at AccuQuilt, do you want to see the

AccuQuilt Go!baby in action?

Of course you do!

Introducing Jennifer Rodriguez with a BEAUTIFUL Quilt project using this GREAT machine!

Hi all! I’m Jennifer Rodriguez from All Things Belle. I am a huge fan of my AccuQuilt die cutter and am so very excited to share a tutorial with you today.
This past month my local quilt guild focused on quilting diamonds. Now they did warn me they can be tricky, but this cuddle quilt is a great way to learn the technique. Why are they tricky? Well since diamonds are cut on the bias, some edges will tend to stretch. Just go slow and have fun!
Cutting fabric for a quilt is not my favorite part of the process and I love that Accuquilt makes it go by quicker! I cut & quilted this fun quilt all in one evening.
Pirate Diamonds
All seams are 1/4″.
Finished blanket size – 21.5″ square
This size is perfect for the car, the trips to the library, or trips to the park.
Supplies:
*5 Riley Blake Pirates – Fat Quarters
* 23″ square backing fabric
*Bias tape -binding
* 23″ square of batting
1.) Cut out 67 diamonds from the fat quarters using the AccuQuilt die. Play with the arrangement until you are satisfied.

2.) You will sew each row one at a time.
3.) When all the rows are completed, sew them together. Be careful when matching up the corners.
4.) Baste your quilt. I personally like to spray & pin baste.
5.) I did a double echo quilting on the diamonds. I love how it makes them super puffy!
Here is a view of the quilting from the back.
6.Bind as desired. When I sew baby and children quilts that I know will get a lot of heavy use, I bind with my sewing machine.

Even though this blankie is not for my sweet Juliette, she does it give two thumbs up!

Thank you so much for spending this time with me and I hope you’ll try diamonds soon. They are a tad tricky, but AccuQuilt makes them fast to cut and the results are truly outstanding!
I hope you will stop by my blog, All Things Belle for more quilting fun or my Etsy shop where you can request a custom quilt!

Thank you so much Jennifer!
I can’t wait to get sewing my own Diamond Quilt using my
Go!baby and I know you will too!

Simply comment bellow for your chance to win the
AccuQuilt Go!baby and three dies.

~GOOD LUCK~

Fabulous Friday :

Fabulous Friday with Elizabeth Hanley

Things change, Life happens…

It was time for me to experience life on a different level. It was also time for me to do all those little things I was longing to do, since my children have grown. One, for starters start a Blog. Two, start a business. Three, be creative in a world of many creative beings.

I needed a hobby.

In 2010, my life was about to change. My computer, my cannon, and my notepad were my new sidekicks.

This is how my humble beginnings all began. Dreaming, “Vintageness” in the wee hours of the night. Doing what I love best and loving all things Vintage concept came into fruition. My name is Elizabeth Hanley. Some of my fans know me best as, “LizlovesVintage.” I wear my important hats. I’m a Mom, Homemaker, Wife, New Grandma, Advocate for Battered Women and work a FT. job with Special needs children. It’s a busy life but, I wouldn’t change any of it if I could. In my spare time, you can find me the flea. Adding, a little bit of Vintage with a touch of Liz, in each handpicked treasure I find. A unique conversation piece or that one collectible find make it’s way back to my Etsy shop for sale. Believe me it’s hard parting with some of these Vintage gems.

Only if I had a bigger home to store it all in! Lastly,I’m a true Blogger. Blogging gave me the inspiration I was longing for with an added zest to be creative. Here I incorporate Vintage living, Aspirations and Collecting. I’ve found that hobby I was so desperately searching for.The web is an amazing place. An amazing place where I want to be and proud to be in it as a huntress of Vintage. Stop by and join in on the conversation. Or maybe, take a peek to see what I’m up to next!

A special Thank You to all who have guided me along the way. Given me that extra support to start something new and exciting.

My Hubby for holding my hand and my Best Friend Stephanie, for pushing me in the right direction.

Kudos, to Where Women Create. For inspiring Women to follow their dreams … No matter how small they may be.

Thanks Again.

Peace, Love, Vintage

Fabulous Friday :

Fabulous Friday … The Creative Connection Event!

THE CREATIVE CONNECTION … it was an event that was created for women to share their knowledge, their skills, their perceptions and sensibilities, their accomplishments, and yes, even some of their secrets. What actually  happened was an “experience” where women gave to each other “everything” they had to give.

At the Crowne Plaza in St. Paul, September 15-17, 2011,  the women who came created a “shelter in the storm” where dreams were confessed, hopes were repeated out loud, problems and setbacks were worn as a badge of courage, knowledge and experience were given freely, and confidence was entrusted to all of us, by each of us, without hesitation and with elegance, polish, and sincerity.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being such an important part of my dream and proving that anything is possible … we simply need to believe in ourselves, in each other, and quiet those on the outside who profess their skepticism, hesitation, and distrust.

If I had but one wish for each of you (besides a Marcus Leaver in your life), it would be that you receive what you so freely give.

Much love always
Jo

Fabulous Friday with MaryJanes Farm

We at MaryJanesFarm strive to give our readers a place to connect about everything organic and share environmentally conscious choices and sustainable lifestyles that are affordable.

MaryJane  has always valued an organic and socially responsible lifestyle, and those values have been carried into adulthood. What started as an organic camping food catalog soon blossomed into a fully realized magazine, and developed into books, a comprehensive website, and most recently, a blog.  Giving consumers the option to participate in a global move for change, MaryJanesFarm is one part dream, one part reality, one part future, and is always striving to educate the minds and hearts of like-minded women through sisterhood “We are all in this together,” says MaryJane.

So let’s take it down a notch and get a little looser. My daughter, Meg, and I are so thrilled to be attending The Creative Connection event to share with you one of our most basic necessities in life—the making of bread. Taking inspiration from our Historic Barron Flour Mill in Oakesdale, Washington, on the National Registry of Historic Places, we chose bread making because it is the staple of American households.

Come share an amazing weekend with us and many wonderful teachers at the event’s “MaryJanesFarm Day” as they share with you ideas for party planning, vegan recipes, cheese making, dessert as art, and food as medicine. And you’ll learn how to take photos of it all with a food photography workshop. We look forward to seeing you there! Find us on Facebook, where we share recipes, merit-badge success stories, organic news, and all the exciting happenings at MaryJanesFarm. http://www.facebook.com/MaryJanesFarm

Leigh’s FABULOUS company,

is a Tote Sponsor of this year’s event!

Can’t wait to see what she brings!

Leigh also attended TCC last year and had this to say about her experience:

“one of my all-time favorite event weekends of the year is RIGHT around the corner and I wanted to give it one last pitch. If there is any possibility at all of you joining me there, please do! You will not be sorry! The Creative Connection Event is held in St. Paul, Minnesota, Sept. 15-17th 2011. The list of incredible presenters, teachers, panelists (including yours truly) and sponsors is simply too long and amazing to list here, but take a gander at their website to get the gist.

No matter what facet of creativity and/or business you are involved or interested in, there is something for you here. The connecting and networking alone would be worth it, but there is so much fun to be had! Incredible and beautifully curated meals and presenters, fun fun fun classes (I made some insane jewelry last year!) a marketplace where you can find all sorts of treasures (including Curly Girl products) and tons more! This year there is a whole food component too for all of you foodies out there (ahem, I may or may not be taking a cheese making class…. right!?)! I mean, I could go on, but the table-decor alone last year was worth the trip (not to mention the swag!)! Do not pass go, do not make other plans. Sign up today if you can!”

Thank you Leigh for sharing your story!

Now this wouldn’t be FABULOUS FRIDAY without a giveaway would it?

Leigh has kindly offered this DARLING apron from her brand new line with DEMDACO,

PLUS

a copy of her brand new 2012 CALENDAR!

Fabulous Friday :

Fabulous Friday with Arrow Sewing Cabinets!

Hello everyone, we’re the folks at Arrow Sewing Cabinets/Kangaroo Kabinets, and we are so excited to spend Fabulous Friday with you, and to be a part of The Creative Connection!

We are all about helping women (and men) put together a fun and functional creative space. Our cabinets are designed to work hard, but look pretty too. We are always trying to find ways to put the “fun” in functional!

{Editors note: Facebook friends, this is the Olivia sewing table that I want for my sewing room. Isn’t she DARLING! I had a chance to visit her at Spring Quilt market and I’m hoping to bring her home someday!}

For that matter, we’re always trying to find ways to add a little “fun” to our workday too! We just recently finished a “barn quilt block” that will soon be gracing the entrance to our building. Thank goodness our resident quilter, Jo, came to the rescue and made sure our block was “pieced together” properly! Jo is an avid quilter, and actually sews at her desk during her lunch hour.

We also try to take advantage of Phil’s forgiving nature as much as possible by making him pose for silly pictures:

We’re very lucky that he’s a good sport!

We like to have fun with our fans on our Facebook page and our blog too. We just announced a “Tablecloth Makeover” contest on the blog, and every Friday we do a little giveaway on Facebook. In addition, we are also giving away one of our wonderful Gidget II’s every time we add 500 fans, and when we hit 5000 fans, we’ll be giving away an entire sewing suite -cabinet, chair, and cutting table! Head on over to our Facebook page to give us a “like” and find out how to join in on all the fun! It’s not all fun and games at Arrow though. There are two things we take very seriously – the quality of our Arrow and Kangaroo cabinets, and our commitment to customer service. Our goal is to make sure that all of our customers are 100% happy with our products. We want their creative time to be worry free!

Thanks for sharing a little of your Friday with us – we hope you all have a fun and creative weekend!

We are honored to have Arrow Sewing Cabinets as a Program Sponsor of

THE CREATIVE CONNECTION EVENT.

PLUS!

BIG NEWS!

They are giving away a GIDGET ll SEWING table RIGHT HERE!

That’s right!

Fabulous Friday :

Fabulous Friday with Debbie Murray and Shea Fragoso

    DuoHeadshot

Being a mother/daughter design team definitely has it’s advantages. Take for instance the seed of an idea that came last fall. Sitting in our studio pondering the future, a chance thought began to develop into an exciting possibility. With the bond that we share (some might even say the same mind!!), when one spoke the other knew EXACTLY what was being proposed and how to proceed to the next step.

Thus, the Gilded Girls Stash Society was born.

GGSS banner

An idea to share all of the yummy goodness that we use in our own studio with women all around the world seemed like a dream come true. The initial concept was hammered out into a final plan that would send vintage and vintage-inspired textiles, trims, paper, embellishments, millinery and jewelry findings to their new homes both here and abroad.

We were absolutely amazed when we hit our initial target number of members. A simple blog post announcing our new endeavor was uploaded to our blog, with an opportunity to “fly blind” with us, before we even posted pictures of the actual “stash”. Imagine our amazement when we not only sold each and every spot we had available, but we began a waiting list from month one.

DreamStash1

Hunting and gathering each month’s product for what we call our “box of beautiful” is a thrill that will never get old. Digging through a millinery store’s inventory from 1940 and finding the blush pink velvet posies that complement a linen fabric, is a rush of joy that only a crafter’s soul could understand. Discovering the gold tipped angel wings found behind a box of funky glass beads that make you audibly squeal with delight will forever thrill.

SSApril1

All the dust from the boxes yanked down from the top shelf, all the miles racked up on the car for the good of a dig, all the Starbuck’s Venti black iced tea that are required to keep you going on a hot summer’s day, are nothing compared to the emails and comments of women who “get us”. When they email to let us us know that they just received their boxes and jumped up and down in their living room while covered in glitter and tulle… well, that is priceless.

Aug11.1

The Gilded Girls Stash Society was an epiphany. It was something that we were meant to do, for us and for the “Gilded Girls”. We are honored to hold this task we have been trusted with by so many.

Closeup8
Each month it is a joy to curate these treasures into a cohesive “story”. We take inspiration from birthstones, flowers-of-the-month, holidays, and of course the Seasons themselves. We try to stay very true to our vintage roots while introducing variety and the element of surprise.

Bracelet2

Membership in the Gilded Girls Stash Society also includes access to a private blog where tutorials are posted several times each month using the items from the kit. This is a very popular component of the Society, and we always look forward to seeing photos of the work that members share through a Flickr group and Facebook page.

Fabulous Friday with Charlotte Lyons

I imagine I’m like many of you – I started making things when I was a young girl and just kept on going. It’s in me to create, to stitch, to design, to paint, to decorate. To make.

And to teach too.

I taught school for a bit before my children were born. Staying home with my three girls inspired me to make the most of what I really loved to do. I could draw a little and I could design a little, but an adult-ed class in rug hooking helped me combine those simple skills into a huge passion. You could say I was hooked, designing and making stacks of gorgeous, colorful hooked rugs, originating with my drawings, made from repurposed clothing. Start to finish, I loved making wool felt from clothes for my rugs, thrifting it, dyeing it, cutting it up and giving it new life underfoot. So much fun! (Once I even cut up my father-in-law’s trousers for a rug. Oops, I thought he didn’t want those anymore!)

Country Living did a feature story on my rugs in the 80′s and then my friends, Mary Engelbreit, Barbara Martin and I collaborated on the Mary Engelbreit Home Companion series of books and later the magazine too. We had the best time traveling the country in search of inspired homes and artists to include in our books. There were eight of those including the seasonal craft book series!

My family moved to New York where I had the chance to author my own beautiful books with Simon and Schuster. Mothers and Daughters at Home is pretty much the story of my creative life at home with my three daughters. Must say, it’s a stunningly beautiful book full of timeless projects to share with children. Soon after, I wrote Between Friends: Craft Projects to Share, another lovely collection of projects and design.

Along the way, I also designed projects for many magazines, began licensing my work for the marketplace, started teaching again, both here at home and all across the country (Silver Bella, French General, Tinsel Trading, MEHC Workshops). My classes are popular with crafters who appreciate a down to earth approach to making things. Really- it’s supposed to be fun! All skill levels are welcome in my classes where we laugh and share everything from tools to tips. On every level, I learn so much from my students. What’s better than making something in the company of other makers?

What am I doing now? I’m designing fabric for this year’s Quilt Market and stitch samplers for my Etsy shop. Forever and always, I love to playfully collage bits of things together from the collections in my studio – lots of wool along with vintage fabrics, papers, trinkets and trims. And I still get out the rug hook every now and then. Handwork is my daily yoga.

I’m excited about TCC! I love to teach and I’m looking forward to meeting you, having a chance to share what I know, what I brought with me and then dig into all that creative energy and make beautiful things side by side. These events are the most inspiring ways to refresh the creative spirit. I’ve met some of my dearest friends and greatest inspirations in classrooms like these. Let’s make something! Hope to see you there!

MODKID-HQ-cleanedup-01

I am beyond thrilled to be teaching two of my most popular sewing projects at this year’s The Creative Connection Event in Minneapolis, September 15th – 17th, 2011! And I’d like to tell you all about them…

I’ll be teaching two classes (click on the name to be taken directly to the class page):

Sun & Surf Tote
At the start of this class I will hand you a kit that contains everything, and I mean, EVERYTHING, you need to complete this awesome tote… from the fabric, to the interfacing to all the notions, including buttons, grommets and even the thread! You will even get the original pattern, so you can take it home and make it again and again. You will walk away with a finished tote, just like the one pictured below, that is perfect for a trip to the beach, swim lessons or a day at the park. Hmmm…maybe it can even become your carry-on luggage for your return trip!

TCCE-Tote1

French Window Pillow Cover
Just like with my other class, you will receive a signature MODKID bag containing everything you need to complete this adorable pillow cover, including all the fabrics, the printed tutorial, the binding, thread and even a cute MODKID woven tag! All fabrics are from my Sanctuary line for Michael Miller Fabrics.

Also, I received a box of goodies from my good friends at OLFA. There are circle cutters and rotary cutters galore. We’ll get to play with these in class and at the end of the class, I’ll draw names for a giveaway.

TCCE-blog-OLFA-cutters

And last, but certainly not least, the wonderful folks at Prym-Dritz Consumer USA, just sent over a large box of sewing notions to give away at my classes. This is just the top layer of the large box! There are large snap-on grommets (the same ones we use in the Sun & Surf Tote), rotary cutters, rulers and self-healing mats.

TCCE-blog-Prym-Dritz-goodies

I have so many donated items now that EVERY student will be able to walk away with a free goodie or two from our wonderful sponsors! YAY!

So, in case you missed it above click here to read more about the Sun & Surf Tote class and here for the French Window Pillow class. Register soon because these classes fill up fast and there’s limited enrollment!

Oh, I will also be participating in a roundtable pitch slam session – Pitch To Become A Designer for a Textile/Licensing Manufacturer. If you’ve ever wanted to become a licensed textile designer, here’s your chance to pitch your collection to a group of experts! I will be sharing the roundtable with Heather Bailey and Suzy Ultman. After pitching their ideas, participants will be able to spend some time with artists that have been through the whole licensing process. The experts in this category are Kathy Miller and Lilla Rogers. Learn more about this Pitch Slam session here.

Hope to see you all there this September! To celebrate my participation in THE CREATIVE CONNECTION EVENT, I would like to give away a sewing pattern bundle to a lucky reader. You will receive an assortment of 6 of our popular sewing patterns from each category. Please leave a comment below to enter.

Fabulous Friday with Amy Barickman

Amy Barickman is a busy entrepreneur, mom and all around creative spirit. Founding her well-known craft & pattern business, Indygo Junction, over 20 years ago, Amy knows what it takes to thrive in publishing. Working with many designers, Amy strives to bring her unique eye for trends to handmade and DIY fashion. She also creates her vintage-inspired fabric line for Red Rooster Fabrics.

Her love of all things vintage led Amy to embark on a second business venture, The Vintage Workshop. Developed to provide creative spirits with a resource for timeless imagery, The Vintage Workshop’s blog offers Amy’s Pick, an image-a-day giveaway. Like us on Facebook to see the daily feature!

Last year, Amy presented her latest endeavor at The Creative Connection. Publishing her “labor of love”, Vintage Notions: An Inspirational Guide to Needlework, Cooking, Sewing, Fashion & Fun under her new venture, Amy Barickman, LLC book publishing.

Amy’s book has won multiple awards in the independent publishing community. Here is an excerpt from the magazine Foreword Reviews…

“…Vintage Notions…is a celebration of domestic aesthetics…the book itself is art, overflowing not only with sweet morsels of fashion, needlework, and cooking, but with beautiful textures and colors…This book would be welcomed by anyone who is inclined to a vintage bent, who fancies home economics, or who finds happiness in making art out of life.”
~ Foreword Reviews

Recently, we sat down with Amy to talk a little more about her experiences publishing her book Vintage Notions, and to share a bit about her experience as a panelist at The Creative Connection event last year:

TCC event was wonderful! The Marketplace offered an amazing venue for sharing, selling and networking with other gifted artisans. I was thrilled to be a part of the panel on launching a business and I learned so much from my fellow speakers! The sharing of our experiences has proved to be invaluable on many levels! The event that continued throughout the weekend offered so many opportunities to network with successful, creative women in business.

This year I am returning to be a part of the Self Publishing Panel. I’m so excited and honored to be joining this talented group of women. I’ve learned so much during the process of publishing and marketing Vintage Notions – I have so much to share this year.

When did you decide that your research into the life of Mary Brooks Picken should be made into a book?

Vintage Notions really started to materialize as I realized the timeless content that existed in the Inspiration newsletters that the Woman’s Institute published. Many were written by Mary Brooks Picken who eventually complied “her choicest writings” into a small book called Thimblefuls of Friendliness: One Woman’s Every-Day Philosophy. Even more exciting, the more I read her writing and learned about the Women’s Institute that she founded, the more in awe I became of her contribution to the field of women’s entrepreneurship. Not only was Mary herself a successful entrepreneur (something that was, of course, rare for her time), but she also empowered countless other women to support themselves and their families through development of practical skills. I came across so many stories of women who recovered from economic hardships, depression, found new confidence in themselves…all because of the Woman’s Institute’s work. Correspondence classes ran for almost twenty years — I accumulated so much great material that I knew couldn’t just be left to the past. I was compelled to share it with a modern audience!

How has the publishing of Vintage Notions affected your role in the sewing and craft industry?

My other businesses, Indygo Junction and The Vintage Workshop already gave me a broad customer base, but publishing Vintage Notions allowed me to connect with even more people. I’ve found new professional communities – The Fashion Group, and the Costume Society (both organizations Mary was instrumental in founding). Because of all the research I did, I’ve also found a platform on which to speak professionally sharing Mary’s story, and that of The Woman’s Institute as well as my experience with 20 years in the industry. The story of the domestic arts, particularly sewing becoming a means for economic improvement is so relevant for the modern community of sewing and craft. Through my lecturing so many have inspired me! Mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs has been particularly rewarding.I had a wonderful experience at as a panelist at last year’s Creative Connection and really am looking forward to joining the panel on publishing this year.

What feedback have you gotten about Vintage Notions?

I’ve gotten very positive feedback on it! We’ve actually won a number of book awards and recognitions, from organizations like the Independent Publisher Book Awards,, and Foreword Reviews’ 2010 Book of the Year.I’ve also gotten some really nice reviews from other women in the industry, such as Mary Engelbreit and Amy Butler. What’s really been fun, though, is the feedback from people who buy the book.A lot of readers have some sort of connection, or a family member that gives them an interest in sewing or home arts. I think the book offers a platform for sharing stories for future generations, and I love to see this book encouraging that discussion.

Why did you decide to publish independently, and how has that worked out for you?

We did submit the proposal to several publishers, but didn’t receive any offers. I believed in the material, though, and decided to move forward independently. Fortunately, I had some experience in publishing with Indygo Junction —mainly 24-64 page instructional books. But this book was much more complicated.Vintage Notions was more inspirational title than project based. I was fortunate to have a talented colleague,Jean Lowe, agree to take on the editorial direction and coordinate production of the book. She has extensive experience in trade publishing.

Self-publishing is a challenging process, but I believe it was the right path. I kept control of the book’s look and content, and I can confidently say that it turned out true to my vision. We also had the flexibility to create our own campaigns, contests, and sell direct to stores and customers.

How long did it take you to write and publish the book?

About a year and a half. The process of printing overseas itself took about three months including shipping.I would have liked to print domestically, but that would have priced the book out of the market.

What was your favorite part of the whole process?

I really enjoyed the process of discovering and finding little nuggets of wisdom and inspiration within the material. The whole thing was an amazing journey—researching and finding out how relevant Mary Brooks Picken’s contributions still are today, and how many generations of women were affected. And the wonderful thing is, those discoveries haven’t stopped yet!

If you have ever wanted to know the ins and outs of getting your book published, you can’t miss this panel! Plus, Amy will also be signing copies of her book Vintage Notions at the Autograph Party in The Handmade Market. This book is one of my all time favorite creative books. I love anything to do with vintage images and sewing, so I was so excited when I received it last summer. I read the entire book in one sitting! How would you like to see for yourself? Amy was kind enough to offer a copy of Vintage Notions as well as one yard each of the 19 coordinates of her new fabric line – The Dressmaking Collection that was inspired by the book. It’s a sweet deal as the fabric won’t be available to the public technically until September. I so wish I could enter!

All you need to do is comment to this post with the number one author you’d like to meet at the Autograph Cocktail Party. That’s it!
