Fabulous Feature: Paint Cubby

This week we are featuring another item that would work perfectly in your home, office, workspace, or studio.  The best part?  It is from you, one of our loyal readers.  It means so much more to learn from you why YOU love what is in your space.  I am constantly inspired by what is shared with us.  Today’s paint cubby from Lianne of Swirly Designs is no exception.

I love how functional the cubby is.  And how the items in the cubby are the actual focal point.  The paint is so organized and inviting.  I am sure it leads to hours of creativity.

I’ve already explained why I like this organized cubby but, let’s find out why this is Lianne’s favorite studio item:

“Having our studio on the main floor of our house was a decision that we both agreed was the best option, but it was very important to us that the studio be well organized and blended in with the rest of the house.

That’s why one of our favorite storage pieces is this cubby organizer wall shelf. We are able to store all our paints, by color, that we use for our handmade ornaments.  It makes for easy access to all the paints plus being able to see the bright colors of paint from our work table makes us smile. We’ll also create mini displays and vignettes for different holidays in the cubes for inspiration.”

The Handcrafted Wedding: Tags

Today we are featuring another project from “The Handcrafted Wedding“.  One thing I love about the ideas and projects in the book are their versatility.  They can be used for so much more than just a wedding.

This how-to on making tags is simple, fun, and perfect for your next soiree.  For a wedding it is fun to add the couples’ names but imagine adding the birthday girl’s name, the upcoming baby’s name, or just about anything.  The possibilities are endless.

Fabulous Feature: Brown Tile Work Surface

Each week I have been dedicating posts to featuring items that would fit perfectly in your workspace, office, studio, or even home.  But I really am interested in what makes your space YOU.  Now we are beginning to feature items you love and use in your space.  Today we are  excited to feature Anna Pereira’s favorite item in her workspace.

The pure simplicity of this large brown tile as a work surface is genius.  And when you see why Anna loves her tile you will wonder why you didn’t think of this yourself:

“My 16×16 tile make the best work surface. Smooth, flat, non absorbing. If I need to use the exacto, I won’t damage anything. I love it! And if I am working with beads, I just lay a foam beading cloth on top.”

Kitschy Crafts-Jeweled Box Tutorial

Boxes can be used for so many things.  From storage, to organization, to decorboxes are so versatile.  If you plan on displaying a box or using it for decor you will want it to be beautiful and uniquely you.  Thankfully, within the pages of “Kitschy Crafts” there is a perfect option for everyone.

What I really love about this jeweled box tutorial is just how customizable it is.  You can create a box that fits your personality and space perfectly.  And it finally gives me a reason to pick up all the sparkly items I find at thrift stores and yard sales.

The Romantic Prairie Cookbook

We’ve given you the chance to fall in love with Fifi O’Neill over the last several weeks.  And we just can’t stop sharing.  But with the amazing work that Fifi produces, it’s hard not to share.

Today I am lucky enough to introduce you to another fabulous book by our friend Fifi, The Romantic Prairie Cookbook

The Romantic Prairie Cookbook offers field fresh recipes and homespun settings—the kind of recipes that will live to be classics in your home from the first time you make them.  We invite you to read our entire feature on The Romantic Prairie Cookbook on Where Women Cook.

Fabulous Feature: Alphabet Chest

Every week we dedicate posts to feature items that would make your workspace fabulous.  But I really wanted to know what makes your space a place you enjoy spending time in. I reached out to our wonderful community on Facebook to find out what their favorite item in their office, workspace, or studio is.  We had an overwhelming response and today I am excited to feature Tara Bradford’s favorite item from her new home office.

I could tell you why adore this lovely alphabet chest but I think Tara herself says it so much better:

I am mad about typography, so my favourite item has to be the oak alphabet chest. It was handmade and hand-delivered to me in Paris by Luke Ellis of Kent and London in Whistable, England. The chest holds CDs containing my photo files and little treasures I don’t want to misplace.”

The Handcrafted Wedding: Felt Bags

We have all been to that “wedding of a lifetime”—the wedding everyone is talking about for years to come.  It may be the dress, the food, the decor, or the party afterward but something just sticks out in our minds.  That is what The Handcrafted Wedding is all about…adding those small touches that will leave guests awe inspired.

I absolutely love these felt bags as that “small touch.”  In fact they would be fabulous for baby showers, birthday parties, or any time you want to add a little something special to your event.

Now comes the difficult part.  What to put in these delightful little pouches…

Romantic Prairie Style: The Magazine

Last month we had the honor to introduce you to one of the loveliest women around, Fifi O’Neill, and her book Romantic Prairie Style.

I am sure you have been anxiously awaiting more news about Fifi and her upcoming works.  I am happy to say you don’t have to wait any longer.  Fifi has brought her new magazine Romantic Prairie Style to a bookstore near you.  Now you can find the beautiful and timeless style that was featured in her book throughout the pages of her gorgeous magazine. We even get a sneak peak into Fifi’s home and discover her style is as wonderful as she is.  You may want to get a few copies of the magazine so your friends and neighbors don’t run off with yours.  Yes, it’s THAT pretty.

Great Knitted Gifts: Big Square Knee Socks

Inside the pages of Great Knitted Gifts you will find ideas galore.  But I think the pattern and tutorial for the Big Square Knee Socks may be one of the most fun.  I love the pattern, colors, and length.  It is the perfect gift to knit for a lovely lady in your life (or yourself).

Tiny Tables

Living rooms, doctor offices, and bedrooms all come to mind when most people think of end tables.  But I think a good end table can be versatile and should be included in your office or studio space.  They are small enough to fit in tight spaces, offer extra storage, and can add a little decorative flare.  They are also a great place to display your Where Women Create magazines.

  • Barley Twist Side Table
  • Chairside End Table

Pieography: Winner and Book Announcement

Last fall our sister site, Where Women Cook, held a contest for the best “Pieography: The Story of Your Life in a Pie.”  Needless to say the response was amazing.  Krys Kirkpatrick was crowned the winner with her amazing Creamy Carrot Pie with Crunchy Graham Cracker Crust, Whipped Rum Cream, & Candied Pecans.

A wonderful winner and delicious pie aren’t all that came from the Pieography contest.  It also spawned a new book hitting shelves on September 1st, 2012.  You can read all about the contest, winner, and book here.  I can’t wait for you to have a slice of Pieography!

Studio Shelves

Bookshelves can serve so many purposes ranging from function to beauty. Where else are you going to be able to store all the copies of your favorite magazines? When it comes to choosing shelves for your home, office, or studio space you are likely going to want something that is a little of both.  You don’t have to sacrifice one to have the other.  These ideas are some perfect examples:

  • Traditional Dark Wood Shelving
  • Antique Green Shelving
  • Industrial Wall Mount Shelving
  • Ladder Style Shelving

Romantic Prairie Style

We are so pleased to introduce (or possibly re-introduce for some of you) to Fifi O’Neill.  She is a long time friend of Where Women Create and Wear Women Cook.  And as I tell you a little more about her you will see why.  Fifi has a style, grace, and class that I would love to bottle.  But thankfully I don’t have to bottle it because she shares it with us all through her many works, including Romantic Prairie Style.

Fifi O’Neill
Chez Fifi

Born and raised in Paris, France,  Fifi O’ Neil grew up in the midst of all things French and  began to develop her trademark  style early on. Her formative years, varied skills set, and distinctive style have been the foundation for her multi-faceted career.

Her culinary knowledge first lead to the opening of Deliciously Yours, a successful catering business followed by ownership of 3 hands-on award-winning restaurants in Sarasota, Florida, and a Food editor position for House Home & Living magazine.

Coincidentally, Fifi pursued her writing and styling passions producing feature articles on home decorating, food, and gardening.

As editor, writer and photo stylist, Fifi O’Neill has produced numerous features for  national publications, among which The New York Times, Coastal Living, Country Living, Home Companion, Quick & Easy Decorating, Creative Home, Real Life Decorating, and for Italian and Scandinavian magazines such as Casa Romantica and Casa Antichi (Italy), Jeanne d’Arc Living (Denmark) and many more.

Fifi is the author of Romantic Prairie Style, a lifestyle and decorating book, The Romantic Prairie Cookbook (both published by Ryland Peters & Small.)  She is also the founder and executive editor of  the new national magazine, Romantic Prairie Style.

Romantic Prairie Style
Homes Inspired by Traditional Country Life

Romantic Prairie Style embraces simple pleasures, comfort and the long-cherished ideals of natural beauty, simplicity and harmony with the earth. It’s a style that says ‘home’ wherever you may be because, more than anything else, it’s a mindset: gentle but strong, welcoming and lasting, durable yet sophisticated and, above all, real.

Over the centuries, the humble dwellings built by European immigrants to the US in the 1880s have evolved into sturdier, more comfortable homes, which, depending on their geographic location, took on a variety of designs, be it a ranch, cabin, farmhouse, cottage or adobe. Each of these styles plays a role in prairie style and its enduring aura of romance and nostalgia.

Here, interiors bear the influence of European settlers and the poetry of the heart-warming authenticity of simple, natural textures, hand-hewn beams, bleached wood, weathered planks, woven blankets, cow-hide and Navajo rugs. It’s a style inspired by the honesty of homespun materials of the past wedded to a flair for the present. It’s flower-sprigged brocade, tawny leather, crisp eyelet and soft linen, corduroy with crochet trims, woolen plaids, cosy flannel and wispy organza. It’s history retold and all about the enduring connection between people and places and the nostalgia we feel for a rural country life, a yearning for a simpler life, as embodied in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie.

As you can see from the pages from her book, Fifi has the ability to capture timeless beauty and elegance.  We encourage you to bring a bit of that beauty into your home.  Fifi’s book, Romantic Prairie Style, is available at all major bookstores and websites like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Home Style Books, and even Nordstrom.

Craftspiration

I love walking into a craft room, studio, or shop to find the mostly lovely craft table or work bench.  Seeing where others create is such a source of inspiration for me.  The functional side of me enjoys seeing the tables or benches and how they are utilized.  I hope these inspire you as well.

Desk Delights

I know many of you have studios, craft rooms, or even shops in which you do a lot of your work.  You likely have gorgeous tables or work benches adorned with all the things you need to create.  But if you are like me, a lot of your creativity is done at a computer.  And even if your aren’t like me, you likely have a need for a desk in your space.  Why can’t your desk be just as lovely as you are?

It’s Written in Stone

I really love the idea of making the wall itself the focal point or “art” of a room.  And while I do enjoy conventional pieces of art on walls, I also appreciate the simplicity of the wall being art.  That is probably why I am so drawn to stone or rock interior walls.  There is something so calming about bringing a little outside in.  And it creates a gorgeous canvas if you want to hang any additional decor.
