Wednesday Wisdom … Still Crafting at 90+

Meet Irene. She's such an inspiration to all …

We received the most wonderful email about Irene from our creative friend Debbie. She wrote:

"Irene is not only a crafty lady, but a very gentle kind soul who has been my partner in crime (so to speak) in creating decoration for the Mulcaster Mews, but is a great inspiration when she works on the quilts for the Kids for Cancer in our region."

We just had to share her inspiring story with you …

Irene "Learn to Sew or Do Dishes" is the choice my Mother gave to me when I was 12. Never washed a dish until I got married. My love for sewing, stitching and crafting has enriched my life with wonderful friends that I have met over the years and am still meeting new ones that share the love of crafting. It has also seen me through the dark days of caring for my aging parents and two husbands. I thought I would have to give up crafting with failing eyesight and health, but with all of the new things our now, nothing is stopping me now. I have a wonderful son who is helping me journal all my works and some of my pieces may end up in the museum in Guelph, Ont.

Ribbons, lace, embroidery threads, buttons, gems and of  course, sparkles are what I loved to embellish the items given to me like the Barbie Quilt for the Kids for Cancer program in our region.

I also create seasonal decorations for the retirement residence where I live.

I love the creative process when I want to recycle something. When I must rest, I know that I can keep my hands and mind busy with stitching or looking at magazines that showcase people's creative talents. If you want to read more of my story, just go to www.fabriccraftsbydj1.webs.com and check our my photo album and the blog.

Wasn't that wonderful? Do you have someone like Irene who inspires you? My own sweet Great-Grandmother was an excellent quilter. I still have the beautiful whole-cloth quilt she created for me when I was born. Even though she was at 83 at the time, her stitches are so close and perfect. Now matter how hard I try (and with perfect eyesight!), I can't get mine even close to that!

Please share your inspiration!

I’ve been a scrapbooker in one form or another since the time I was reading & writing. I guess you can say it’s in my blood. Over the years I’ve been through quite the evolutionary process in the “creative side” of scrapbooking. Techniques, creative layout design, latest & greatest tools … yep. I was in the thick of all of that. In fact, I published several books on the topic of scrapbooking.

BH2

And then, in that evolutionary process, I came to find myself relating to everyone who ever said to me, "Good for you to have that hobby. But scrapbooking is too time-consuming, too complicated, too expensive, too much. It’s not for me." I was beginning to understand that perspective because I was getting more and more busy with our children and responsibilities and life in general. Plus, I found myself caring a lot less about the “stuff” (products, techniques, layout design) and more about the real core of memory-keeping: pictures + stories.

Today I am focused on helping those who feel similarly. Nearly two years ago, Becky Higgins LLC was born so that I could share solution-based ideas and products with those who are interested in getting their stories and pictures preserved without feeling completely overwhelmed by the process. Project Life has become the method of preserving memories that is helping thousands of people get their pictures off the computer and into a book.

BH3

The key to my approach? Simplicity. This form of scrapbooking is as simple as it gets, while still resulting in beautiful, personalized albums. Project Life has sold out all over the world and two editions are currently being reprinted and due to become available again in September 2011. Plus, we’re adding a couple more designs so that we’ll have 4 editions available by November 2011.

BH4

The digital version of Project Life is always available and never sells out and completely free for anyone to try. Learn more about both versions at www.beckyhiggins.com/products.

BH5

Here’s what we still have in stock right now, while we’re waiting on those products to become available: Our Photo Pocket Pages are designed to hold 4×6 photos and our 3×4 Journaling Cards so that every picture can have some accompanying journaling if you want. You slip the photos and Journaling Cards into the pockets and … that’s it. Plus we have gorgeous Turquoise and Amber binders available to house all those pages.

BH6

No cutting & pasting. No figuring out layout design. No complicated techniques. This is simplicity at its finest. For those who want to get creative, no problem. There is plenty of room for adding your creative twist if you’d like!

BH7

When it comes to preserving memories, we all fit somewhere on the spectrum. Some have never, ever done a thing with their pictures. Some have never really written their memories or stories down at all. Then there are some have 50 scrapbooks scattered throughout their homes. There are devoted journal-writers and expert photographers. And then … the rest of us are somewhere in the middle.

Connecting with people all over that spectrum is what has brought me to this point where I have a passion for helping others document their life. Through my blog and my products, I hope to continue inspiring others to cultivate a good life and record it. When we record our memories and happenings and thoughts … we are more keenly aware of how truly blessed we are.

I’ll be speaking at this year’s The Creative Connection and I am so excited to extend that reach and connection to many, many more … no matter where you are on that spectrum. See you in September!
