Wednesday Wisdom … Still Crafting at 90+

Meet Irene. She's such an inspiration to all …

We received the most wonderful email about Irene from our creative friend Debbie. She wrote:

"Irene is not only a crafty lady, but a very gentle kind soul who has been my partner in crime (so to speak) in creating decoration for the Mulcaster Mews, but is a great inspiration when she works on the quilts for the Kids for Cancer in our region."

We just had to share her inspiring story with you …

Irene "Learn to Sew or Do Dishes" is the choice my Mother gave to me when I was 12. Never washed a dish until I got married. My love for sewing, stitching and crafting has enriched my life with wonderful friends that I have met over the years and am still meeting new ones that share the love of crafting. It has also seen me through the dark days of caring for my aging parents and two husbands. I thought I would have to give up crafting with failing eyesight and health, but with all of the new things our now, nothing is stopping me now. I have a wonderful son who is helping me journal all my works and some of my pieces may end up in the museum in Guelph, Ont.

Ribbons, lace, embroidery threads, buttons, gems and of  course, sparkles are what I loved to embellish the items given to me like the Barbie Quilt for the Kids for Cancer program in our region.

I also create seasonal decorations for the retirement residence where I live.

I love the creative process when I want to recycle something. When I must rest, I know that I can keep my hands and mind busy with stitching or looking at magazines that showcase people's creative talents. Wasn't that wonderful? Do you have someone like Irene who inspires you? My own sweet Great-Grandmother was an excellent quilter. I still have the beautiful whole-cloth quilt she created for me when I was born. Even though she was at 83 at the time, her stitches are so close and perfect. Now matter how hard I try (and with perfect eyesight!), I can't get mine even close to that!

Please share your inspiration!

What an inspiring story. I’m not sure where I get my love of sewing from. Neither my mother nor grandmother sewed! I hope I’m still quilting at 90+!

I LOVED reading about Irene’s story. I want to still be happily crafting when I’m her age. That’s so cool that she’s still crafting. Her projects are so cute :) :)

I learned how to crochet Granny Squares a few years ago because my Granny always made crochet items for my children and their dolls. I was always busy and too impatient to learn when my Granny was alive, but I wanted to learn her craft so I could make Granny’s craft a family tradition. Reading Irene’s story made me think of my own sweet grandmother and I’m so happy that Irene get joy from crafting and brings joy to others as well. Go Irene!

Can I be like Irene when I grow up? Love the story and her enthusiasm. My Nonna was like Irene, back in Sicily. Always keeping busy. Mending, cooking, sewing and trying to teach me what she knew. Miss Nonna Angelina. Great post Mss Packham.

Such a wonderful story. And so inspiring to those around her and to me! The sisterhood of women is so enriched by our ability to work with our hands and our appreciation of the work that our sisters, mothers and grandmothers do with their hands. Thank you for allowing us to know this story!

Thank you for sharing such an inspiring story and such beautiful work.
Brings back such warm memories of my grandmother teaching me to sew, crochet and craft with whatever was available. Others saw it as keeping me busy, but she saw it as a way to teach me something I would always use.

Inspiring indeed! I really hope I end up being just like her. It’s the key to life, stay active!!! My mother retired at the age of 84 after working 46 years FULL TIME in the retail business. (I tell my husband, “don’t get any ideas!”) Thanks for sharing her story, Marcia
